As the architecture department transitions from its historic location inside MIT’s dome to the new MET Warehouse, our studio designed an archive. The archive is meant to house the old and new, memory and community, public and private.

This tower, inside one of MIT’s main courtyards is a vertical connection of the subterranean, related to MIT’s historic tunnel system, to a new sort of dome - a “cloud” auditorium to be lit up at night and visible on the Boston skyline. A new program is introduced: a sauna bathing center at the root of the tower. This would be a place of intimate gathering, an informal place to pass down knowledge through the years as a sort of “folklore” and the real archive of the department.
