This project focuses on creating reciprocity in food systems while fostering a sense of community. Situated in East Boston, near the ICA Watershed, Jordan and I reimagined a grain silo and industrial grain production facilities as a dynamic community center. Envisioned within a field of wheat, the design features a bakery, a milling floor, and a storage silo, blending food production with educational spaces and a market, all functioning as a hub for the neighborhood.

The building’s design follows post-modern, or meta-modern, principles. While it presents itself as a traditional grain silo, it has been subverted and reinterpreted as a welcoming, community-friendly space, as inspired by the photographs of Hila and Bernd Becher. The facade facing the community draws inspiration from historic grain elevators, functioning almost like an advertisement board. This choice echoes East Boston’s 20th-century heritage, where Boston and Albany’s grain elevator stood at the heart of a thriving grain and transportation hub where train tracks met water barges.
